What should I know before sending SMS to East and Southeast Asia?

Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Burmese, Khmer and Lao text is written in its own script and sent in UCS-2 at 70 characters per segment. Indonesian, Malay, Vietnamese without tone marks, Tagalog and English use the Latin alphabet; Vietnamese with full diacritics needs UCS-2 as well.

The region spans UTC+6:30 (Myanmar) to UTC+9 (Japan and Korea), and most large cities are at UTC+7 or UTC+8. Banks, e-commerce, ride-hailing and delivery platforms send most of the traffic, and short, plain messages with one clear action work best across these markets.
